I wrote it while looking at this piece my partner bought as his first piece of art.

When I saw his painting
for the first time I knew
I was looking at his heart

vital but bruised
a forgotten chamber with
a rusty valve
beating to be filled
aching for occupation

I knew I had been chosen
To look at it
To furnish the void
To make room for it and
give it
its rightful place 

Most of all I knew I would
take care of it like it had
never been taken care of before

with brutal honesty 
but in a gentle way
Gentle - not soft

Like a touch needs to be
firm enough to feel but
soft enough not to leave a mark
